Customs Duties & Import Taxes
International shipments may be subject to customs duties, import taxes, or local consumption taxes (such as VAT) imposed by your destination country. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. For select destinations, Cross Cart offers a prepaid duty option (DDP) so you can settle everything at checkout.
Duties are paid by the buyer
Any customs duties, import taxes, or local consumption taxes assessed by your destination country are paid by you, the buyer. This is the standard for cross-border purchases worldwide.
How customs duties are calculated
Duties are assessed by your country's customs authority when the package crosses the border. The amount depends on:
- The product category (HS code / tariff classification)
- The declared value (typically item price + shipping)
- Your country's duty rates and de minimis threshold
Thresholds and rates vary significantly by country, so low-value items may still incur duties while high-value items can sometimes be exempt. We recommend checking your country's import rules before purchasing.
Prepaid duties (DDP) vs. Pay-on-delivery (DDU)
For eligible destinations, you can choose between two duty payment methods at checkout:
Duties are paid at checkout together with the order. No additional payment is requested upon delivery, and your total cost is fixed in advance.
Duties are billed by the carrier or local customs at the time of import or delivery. The final amount is determined upon arrival and paid locally.
DDP is currently available only for select destinations. All other destinations are shipped DDU, and you should expect to pay duties upon delivery.
DDP-eligible destinations
If your destination is listed below, you can choose DDP (prepaid duties) at checkout.
All other destinations are shipped DDU. We are continuously expanding DDP coverage.
What you should do as a buyer
- Before buying, check the duty rules and de minimis threshold of your destination country.
- If your destination is DDP-eligible, you can prepay duties at checkout to avoid surprises.
- For DDU shipments, be ready to pay the carrier or customs office when contacted.
- If you refuse to pay duties or refuse delivery, your package may be returned, confiscated, or destroyed by customs. Per our Terms of Service, no refund will be issued in such cases. Please make sure you are ready to pay any duties on DDU shipments.
